FAQ

Common questions about MoNo, what the dates on food mean, and how you can help.

Can you eat foods that are past the Best Before and Expiry Date?

The Best Before and Expiry date indicates the date by which the foods are the freshest. Best Before dates are an indication of food quality, not food safety. After these dates are past, most foods can still be eaten, sometimes for weeks after, just bear in mind to use the Look-Smell-Taste test method. Use By dates are usually found on perishables such as meat or fish. These items serve as a precaution for food safety.

What is the Look-Smell-Taste test method?

This is a test that involves our sense of sight, smell and taste. Spoiled food will usually LOOK different in texture and color, SMELL unpleasant and TASTE bad before it becomes unsafe to eat. Foods past their Best Before and Expiry date are generally fine to consume especially Shelf Stable foods but before you do so, make it a point to do the Look-Smell-Taste test.

What are Shelf Stable foods?

Shelf-stable foods are foods that can be safely stored at room temperature. Some examples of such foods are canned and bottled foods, rice, pasta, flour, sugar, spices, oils, and foods processed in aseptic or retort packages and other products that do not require refrigeration until after opening.

What does food shelf life for a product mean?

Shelf life is defined as the length of time a product may be stored without becoming unsuitable for use or consumption. Shelf life differs for different types of product and is determined by how a product is manufactured, packaged and stored.

Where does MoNo get its food supplies?

MoNo gets its food supplies from distributors or resellers who encounter issues in their supply chain like damages to cartons in which products are packed in or products that are near their expiry date. These products often cannot be sold to the public even though they are still perfectly fine to consume. Here, MoNo steps in to redirect such supplies to consumers in order to fight food waste.

Yes we do! Head on over to Community Outreach to see some of the donation drives that we have participated in.
